What Is Diazepam?

Diazepam is an oral tablet medication that belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines.  Benzodiazepines are also known as tranquilizers.  Diazepam is a controlled substance that’s available as a generic drug.  It’s also available as the brand-name drug Valium.  Valium is usually given in 2-10 mg oral tablets.

How Does It Work?

Valium works by increasing the activity of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA).  GABA is a chemical that sends signals through the nervous system.  If you don’t have enough GABA in the body, you can overexcite the nervous system.  This can result in anxiety, seizures, and muscle spasms.

What Is It Used For?

Valium is commonly used to treat conditions such as anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal.  Diazepam 10 mg is usually used as part of combination therapy.  Combination therapy combines the tablet with other drugs in order to manage certain conditions.  The amount you take depends on what you’re treating it for.  10 mg of Valium is usually the strongest dose.

How Much Should You Take?

Adults will take 2-10 mg of diazepam to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures.  They will take it by mouth 2-4 times per day as needed.  Children and seniors will take much lower doses (usually around 2 mg).  Adults suffering from acute alcohol withdrawal will usually take diazepam 10 mg.  They will take it 3-4 times in the first 24 hours.  Then they will reduce it to 5 mg of diazepam 3-4 times per day.

Diazepam Side Effects

There are certain diazepam side effects you want to be aware of.  Most diazepam side effects are quite mild.  However, some side effects are more serious and require immediate medical attention.  The higher dosage of Valium you take, the more likely you are to experience side effects.  Therefore, anyone taking 10 mg should look out for diazepam side effects.

Common diazepam side effects include drowsiness, blurred vision, and dizziness.  More serious side effects include changes in mental state or mood, difficulty speaking, and muscle weakness.  Diazepam side effects may also include shaking and signs of infection.  Serious allergic reactions are not common with Valium.  However, you should seek medical attention if you have shallow breathing or other symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Drug Interactions

Diazepam 10 mg can interact with certain medications or vitamins that you might be taking.  These interactions can either make Valium less effective or they can cause you harm.  Talk to your doctor about any medications or supplements you’re taking.  This will make sure there are no interactions.

Diazepam can interact with certain acid-suppressing drugs.  These can make it difficult for you to fully absorb Valium.  Drug interactions also include allergy or cold medication.  These can increase the drowsiness side effect of Valium.  Other drug interactions that cause drowsiness also include some antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, or antipsychotics.

Tuberculosis drugs will make your body break down Valium more quickly, making it less effective.  Antifungal drugs will block the enzyme in your body that breaks down Valium.

What Else Does It Interact With?

Valium also interacts with foods such as grapefruit juice.  Grapefruit juice will prevent your liver from properly processing diazepam 10 mg.  Valium also interacts with alcohol.  Drinking alcohol can worsen the side effects of diazepam 10 mg and cause difficulty breathing.

Precautions

As a benzodiazepine, Valium can be highly addictive.  This is especially true for anyone with a history of alcohol or drug abuse.  People with a history of substance abuse may become dependent or tolerant to Valium.  Valium has a black box warning from the Food and Drug Administration.  This warns of dangerous side effects when combining Valium with the use of opioids.

Who Should Not Take It?

Valium is removed from the body by the kidneys and processed by the liver.  Therefore, the doctor should closely monitor anyone with kidney or liver problems.  This will ensure their body is processing the drug correctly.

Pregnant women should not take diazepam 10 mg, as it can cause defects in unborn children.  They should also not take it when breastfeeding.  Seniors and children have a higher risk of side effects from Valium.  This is why they are typically prescribed much lower doses than 10 mg of diazepam.

How To Take It

Diazepam 10 mg is usually only used for short-term treatment.  Be sure to take it as prescribed to avoid the risk of addiction or dependency.  Take Valium by mouth as directed by your doctor.  Make sure you store it in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight.

If you miss a dose of your diazepam 10 mg, take it when you remember.  Do not take multiple doses at once.  This can cause dangerous side effects including drowsiness and low blood pressure.  Don’t stop taking Valium without being slowly taken off of it by your doctor.  Otherwise you risk serious withdrawal symptoms including vomiting, anxiety, and confusion.

How To Know If It’s Working

You will know if Valium is working if you experience relief from your symptoms.  This will depend on what condition you’re taking the drug to treat.  Your doctor will closely monitor how you respond to diazepam 10 mg and adjust it if necessary.

Valium can provide relief for people suffering from anxiety attacks or muscle spasms.  When taken as prescribed by a doctor, diazepam 10 mg can be very effective.  Make sure you’re aware of diazepam side effects and any interactions before taking it.  Talk to your doctor today to find out more about whether or not diazepam 10 mg can treat your symptoms.
